What problem does Numeric solve?
Numeric simplifies the month-end close. I helped design the MVP product (right, previously called Velocity), that focused solely on the reconcile spreadsheet.
Who are the users?
Numeric is focused on solving problems for accountants. Initially focused on users who work on teams of <5, the tool now supports the workflows needed for teams up to ~20 users.
Design challenge 1: data density
The revised 2023 version of the Reconcile table (right) was designed to:
keep actions at users’ fingertips - small yet clear buttons with popover actions
keep information readable at a glance - use of colors, icons, typography, etc.
Design challenge 2: keeping teams organized
Maturing from a platform portal, the redesign (left) focused on task management across Numeric features and visibility into the workflow progress of the team.
Design challenge 3: Working on multiple timelines
Under certain conditions, updating a cell could have knock-on effects and change the data/completion of tasks for previous time frames.
With this in mind, we focused on not only prioritizing current period progress visibility, but also an alert system that shows these cross-timeline implications in context.
In conclusion..
After launching the new design system and updated UX, the company was able to secure a $28M series A, alongside impressive engagement statistics (many users rave about the product and spend 10 hours a month on the platform) and a strong design foundation to expand functionality.
Working for Numeric requires an understanding of accounting processes; however, their users largely follow the same workflows and have the same needs, making research, discovery, and testing all relatively straightforward.
